Emerald Observatory
SPACE DEBRIS OPTICAL TRACKING STATION
Emerald Observatory
Completed in April 2019 the 3m Observatory building is purposely designed and built to host University research equipment for the mapping of space debris. Space debris is a major problem facing satellite providers and operators. Within the industry space debris tracking is referred to as Space Situational Awareness or SSA.
You may be surprised to see trees in the background. The observatory has a clear unbostructed 360 degree view above 45 degrees Alt. Observations at angles lower than this are not practical due to atmospheric effects.
